# How guests pay

> Choose whether guests pay in full, pay part now and the rest later, or pay at check-in, and charge them for extras.

Each listing decides when its guests pay. With Stripe connected, guests pay online on Stripe's checkout page, and Overviu takes care of the rest: balances, invoices and confirming the booking.

<Note>Choosing how a listing is paid is part of its **Pricing** tab; anyone in the team can change it. Connecting Stripe is for owners and admins; see [Connect Stripe](/payments/connect-stripe).</Note>

## Choose how a listing is paid

Open the listing → **Pricing** → **Payment**. Under **When does the guest pay?**, pick one and click **Save payment settings**.

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="In full when booking">
    **Guest pays in full when booking**. On your booking site, the guest clicks **Continue to payment** and pays the whole stay on Stripe's checkout page. The booking is **Awaiting payment** while they pay, and becomes **Confirmed** with the payment status **Paid** as soon as Stripe tells Overviu.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Part now, the rest later">
    **Guest pays part when booking, the rest before check-in**. Set **Paid when booking (% of the total)** and **Balance due (days before check-in)**.

    The guest pays the first part at checkout, and Stripe saves their card. The booking becomes **Confirmed** and **Part paid**. On the due date, in the morning, Overviu charges the rest to the saved card; if that fails, or there's no saved card, the guest is emailed a Stripe invoice for it instead.

    If the guest books after the due date would have passed, the balance is charged the next morning.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="At check-in">
    **Guest pays at check-in (no online payment)**: the default. On your booking site, the guest clicks **Request to book**, no card needed. The booking is **Pending** until you confirm it, with the payment status **Pay at check-in**. When they pay you, [record the payment](/bookings/record-a-payment).
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

The first two need Stripe. Without it, guests can't book a listing set to either one.

## The hold while a guest pays

While a guest pays on your booking site, the booking is **Awaiting payment** and holds its dates for 60 minutes. If the guest doesn't finish in time, the booking is cancelled and the dates are free again, and your team gets a **Payment not completed** email.

For a **Direct** booking you add yourself with **Ask the guest to pay online**, you choose the time (24 hours to 7 days), and the guest pays from their [booking page](/guests/guest-page). On the booking, **Extend** gives them more time.

## Invoices

Some payments are sent as Stripe invoices: the guest gets an email from Stripe and pays it online.

* A balance that couldn't be charged to the saved card.
* A higher price after you [change a booking](/bookings/change-a-booking).
* Extras you charge, below.

When the guest pays an invoice, the booking's payment status follows. Invoices still open are voided if the booking is cancelled or paid in full another way.

## Charge for extras

To charge a guest for something extra (a late checkout, airport pickup, breakage), open the booking and click **Charge guest**. Enter the **Amount** and **What for**, and click **Send invoice**. Stripe emails the guest an invoice they can pay online within 7 days.

Extras are kept apart from the stay: they don't change the stay's price, and a cancellation refund doesn't include them. See [Refunds](/payments/refunds).

## Where to follow payments

* The booking's **Payment** section shows every payment, refund and invoice, and what's still owed. **Open in Stripe** opens a payment in your Stripe Dashboard.
* The **Dashboard** shows upcoming payments and cash flow, and **Reports** has the [money report](/insights/reports).
