# Buildings and units

> Set up a building whose apartments or rooms are let separately: unit types, units and whole-building bookings.

Use a building when you let apartments or rooms in the same place separately, like an aparthotel or a house split into flats. Guests book a type of unit ("2-bedroom apartment"), and Overviu gives them a free unit of that type.

A building has three layers:

* the **Building** itself: the address, photos, description and listing page that all its units share;
* **Unit types**: each kind of unit you sell, with its own capacity and prices;
* units: the actual apartments or rooms of each type, with a name like 2A or 2B.

## Steps

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create the building">
    Go to **Listings** → **Add listing**, choose **A building with units**, fill in the **Public title** and **Property type**, and click **Create listing**. Fill in the building's **Details**: its address, photos, amenities and description are shared by every unit type.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add a unit type">
    Open the building's **Units** tab. Under **Add a unit type**, give it a **Name** like "2-bedroom apartment" and a **Property type**, and click **Add unit type**. The unit type opens on its own page.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set up the unit type">
    A unit type is a listing of its own. On its **Details** tab, set the **Maximum guests**, **Bedrooms** and **Bathrooms** for one unit of this type. Then set its prices on **Pricing** and its stay rules on **Availability**.

    The address, the check-in and check-out times, the timezone and the currency are **Managed on the building**: change them on the building, and every unit type follows.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add its units">
    Back on the building's **Units** tab, type a unit's name in **Unit name, e.g. 2B** under the unit type and click **Add unit**. Add one for each apartment or room of that type. Use **Rename**, **Move up** and **Move down** to tidy them up.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Publish">
    Set the building and each unit type to **Active** (on **Details** → **Basics** → **Status**). A unit type shows on your booking site only when it and its building are active and it has at least one unit.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>Each unit counts toward your plan's limit; the building itself doesn't. When the plan is full, **Add unit** tells you so.</Note>

## Renting the whole building

You can also let guests book every unit at once, for a family gathering or a group.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Turn it on">
    On the building's **Whole building** tab, switch on **Allow booking the whole building**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set its capacity and price">
    Set the whole building's **Maximum guests** and **Bedrooms** on the building's **Details** tab. Set its price and stay rules on the **Whole building** tab, below the switch.
  </Step>
</Steps>

A whole-building booking takes every unit. Any unit booking or blocked night makes the whole building unavailable for those nights.

## Removing a unit

Click **Remove** next to the unit. Overviu refuses while the unit has upcoming bookings: move or cancel them first. Its past bookings stay in your records, and its upcoming blocked nights are removed.

## How units show up

* Calendar: each building appears with its unit types and their units underneath, one row per unit, so you can see which apartment each guest is in.
* Booking site: the building has one listing page, with a card for each unit type you sell, and one for the whole building when it can be booked. When the guest has picked dates, each card shows whether it's free and its price. Guests never choose a specific unit.
* Bookings: each booking shows the unit it was given. You can move a booking to another free unit of the same type; see [Change a booking](/bookings/change-a-booking).
